In Pursuit of Microcosm

~From the booklet of “Free Art” issued in 1997 ~

I have been feeling metals always familiar to me since I was a little child. My father worked for the industry molding using with metals such as aluminum, brass and copper. Metals were melted, poured into a mold, cut and scaled down, and brushed up. These processes made up my experience about metals.
As of molten metals, I had felt fascinated by the strength of their sense of existence, by the elegance of their sharp lines and by the warmth and tenderness that molten metals should have.
I entered into an art university in order to make sculptures with metals. At first, I found there only a world of clay figures in front of a model as an object. However, the harder I worked with clay figures, the more I realized of the still profoundness and the excellence that the clay figures have. Going into them with my heart and soul, every day I was impressed and astonished at working with a world of clay figures. Taking a ladder as an example, as I could see the top of a ladder ten steps ahead, I climbed just one step up struggling with all debts of efforts. Then the top of the ladder would become fifteen steps fore more ahead. This means that I could hardly reach the top.
Maybe it was in those days when I began to gradually understand the greatness of which the world of nature created. Almost being overwhelmed by models as objects I chose, I restructured them by myself and expressed the strong structure of which clay figures have. Then, I have realized that old great art works have their own strong structures by themselves.
After that, I found that Egyptian sculptures were very attractive. They have a microcosm that keeps a perfectly harmonizing balance between Gravity and Energy; the former should pull everything into the center of the earth; and the latter should brow out from the center to the universe. I was moved by the Egyptian sculptures to create the microcosm.
Sometimes I felt that I could catch a glimpse as if I saw a same kind of microcosm. So, I began to display a life-sized statue of standing figure in an exhibition hosted by Jiyou Bijyutsu.
After then, as I was fated to, I got a job in a molding firm owned by late Kenji Akahagi who had established Jiyou Bijutsu. Mr. Akahagi taught me of how he thought of sculptures and let me to help him make sculptures produced by molding. As time being, it grew bigger and bigger in my mind that I should produce my own sculptures by metals. It had been kept deep in my mind. So, I began to create my mold figures in metals.
In general, most of painters who change their expression style from representational to abstract might work experience in both styles for some period of time. In my case, it came suddenly. However, it doesn’t mean that I completely stopped making a representational work. It is because I used to think that I could express what I wanted to show in both styles of representational or abstract.
I shape up a figure by cutting a metal plate of aluminum, stainless steel or so, stringing and combining each other in the air. By using a cool-imaged metal plate as a raw material, I create warmth, tenderness, and even space based on the nature of firmly organized construction.
Forwardly I would like to keep going to pull out a moment of feeling a microcosm into an image of my sculpture forever.

to understand the depth of clay figures. Then the found As I tried hard to make up of my own,
